A Pre-Purchase Inspection is a comprehensive evaluation of a vehicle, typically performed by a third-party mechanic to identify hidden, underlying or concealed mechanical, cosmetic and safety issues. Most inspectors search for major problems such as rust, corrosion, mechanical wear, evidence of repairs and the overall condition of cosmetic components. For an ordinary vehicle purchase, a standard PPI will usually suffice.

Collectively, we've spent lifetimes learning every proper detail of the Porsche 911 model line. Within those details lies the difference between a good car and a serious investment piece.
Recently, we traveled with the intention of purchasing a Black/Black 964 Coupe. When the seller first reached out, we were under the impression that the car was a totally original, untouched example. After reviewing photos and receiving paint meter readings directly from the seller, everything seemed to affirm his claims. We made the trip. The car had been in storage for several years but presented well. A few rock chips, some road rash, the usual signs of age and mileage. It was exactly what we expected to see.
Then we went deeper. We had just reached the engine bay when something caught our eye: the weld joining the rear fender to the frame was inconsistent with factory standards. Further inspection revealed a seam in the sheet metal beneath the paint, a telltale sign of collision repair. The car was not original. It was worth significantly less than we were prepared to pay.
No deal was made. We drove home with an empty trailer. A waste of gas, but a far better outcome than the alternative.
